“Psst, Redhead.”

The quiet voice drags me from my cold, shivering nightmare.

Although, when I open my eyes and find myself curled up on the wet ground, my soaked clothes plastered to my body from the constant rain, it feels like I’ve been thrown into an even worse nightmare.

But that voice…

A panicked reaction grips me, and I search the dungeon frantically, praying to the goddess that Rizor hasn’t captured who I think that voice belongs to.

“Up here,” Knight says, drawing my attention to where the rain has finally stopped pouring through. The little demon peers through the window.

“Knight?” I whisper, wiping the water from my face to be sure it’s him. I pale when I realise it is. “What are you doing here? Did Rizor bring you here? Are you hurt? What’s going on?”

“These are all things”—he slips through the bars, dangling for a moment as he looks at me—“I am here to ask you.”

He lets go before I can catch him. Fortunately, he lands on the ground safely with the lightest of thuds. He scrunches his little face in disgust when he scans the dungeon.

Despite every nerve in my body screaming for me to get him the hell out of here, my heart soars. After being in this hideous place for less than a day, it already means so much to me to see him. I have to remind myself that he isn’t the most affectionate to keep from hugging him.

It’s this reminder that makes me aware of the danger he’s in. If Rizor or any of his mutts find Knight here, they’ll torture him. He’d no doubt use the demon to break me. I can’t even bear the thought, so I step back, away from him.

“You need to get out of here.”

Knight cocks his head at me. “Why? I have only just arrived.”

I shake my head profusely. “No. You need to leave quickly. It’s too dangerous for you to be here.”

The little demon just shrugs at me. “I may be small but I am mighty.” He nods. “Yes. I shall stay right here where I am needed,” he says, then he sits down crossed legged on the ground.

Although his concern for me is touching and brings a tear to my eye, I’d sooner sacrifice myself before letting any harm come to him.

I take a deep, shuddering breath. “Please go. I don’t want them to hurt you, and they will if they find you here.” When he makes no effort to move and simply crosses his arms in that stubborn way of his, I switch tactics. “Dragon needs you. He won’t survive without you to keep him warm.”

The gnome frowns at me. “What about Caspian? He can take care of Dragon. I will take care of you.”

My heart squeezes in my chest. “Caspian probably needs you right now, too.” I pause and bite my lip, recalling the state he was in when I last saw him. “How is he holding up?”

Knight draws in his bushy eyebrows and thinks for a moment.

“He’s
